How to Send a Blank or Empty Message on WhatsApp
A practical guide on how empty text behaves in WhatsApp, why standard spaces fail to send, and how to send blank characters on web and mobile.
If you have ever tried to press the space bar several times in WhatsApp and hit the send button, you already know the result: the send button remains disabled.
WhatsApp, like many modern messaging services, is designed to prevent users from accidentally sending empty messages. In this article, we explain the mechanics behind this restriction, which invisible characters can bypass whitespace detection, and how to send blank text across mobile devices and WhatsApp Web.
Why WhatsApp Disables the Send Button for Spaces
The WhatsApp input field checks the content of your message before enabling the send icon. From a technical perspective:
- Whitespace Trimming: The client evaluates the input string using whitespace-detection algorithms. Standard keyboard spaces (
U+0020), tabs, and regular line breaks are classified as whitespace. - Empty String Evaluation: If trimming the text leaves an empty string (a length of 0 visible characters), the application treats the input as blank. As long as this condition holds, the send arrow remains hidden or inactive.
To send a message that appears blank, the text must contain a character that renders invisibly while simultaneously being classified by the platform as a non-whitespace character.
Which Characters Tend to Work?
Different code points interact with WhatsApp’s input parser in different ways. Depending on whether you are using WhatsApp on Android, iOS, or WhatsApp Web, results can vary:
1. Hangul Filler (U+3164)
The Hangul Filler is often the most reliable option for messaging apps. In the Unicode Standard, this character is categorized under Letter, Other (Lo) rather than Separator, Space (Zs). Because WhatsApp’s input filter does not classify it as conventional whitespace, the send button frequently lights up, allowing you to dispatch a single blank line.
2. Braille Pattern Blank (U+2800)
The Braille Pattern Blank represents an empty 6-dot or 8-dot braille cell. In many fonts, it renders with a slight width and no dots. Because it is technically categorized as a symbol/punctuation character rather than standard whitespace, it can sometimes pass input filters.
3. Zero-Width Spaces (U+200B)
Zero-width spaces are non-printing characters with zero width. On some versions of WhatsApp Web, pasting zero-width spaces may activate the send button, whereas on certain mobile operating systems, the input field may automatically strip them before submission.
Note on Platform Updates: Messaging platforms update their client apps and input filters regularly. What works on one operating system or app version may behave differently after a software update. Testing the character in the text field before sending is always recommended.
Step-by-Step Instructions
To test or send a blank message on your device:
On Mobile (Android or iOS)
- Copy an invisible character from our Blank Space Copy and Paste tool (the single-click presets or the Hangul Filler from the selector work well).
- Open WhatsApp and select the chat where you wish to send the message.
- Tap and hold the text input area until the Paste option appears.
- Tap Paste. You will notice that the cursor shifts slightly or remains in place, and the Send button (the green arrow icon) becomes active.
- Tap Send. An empty bubble will appear in the chat stream.
On WhatsApp Web / Desktop
- Copy a blank character to your clipboard.
- In your browser or desktop app, click inside the chat input box.
- Press
Ctrl + V(Windows) orCmd + V(Mac) to paste the character. - Press
Enteror click the Send button.
Troubleshooting Empty Messages
If the send button remains inactive after pasting:
- Try a Different Code Point: If a zero-width space is stripped by your operating system’s keyboard, switch to the Hangul Filler (
U+3164). - Combine with a Line Break: On desktop, pressing
Shift + Enterafter pasting an invisible character can sometimes help the editor register the payload. - Verify Clipboard Contents: You can verify whether your clipboard actually holds characters using the live Test Area on the Blank Space homepage. If the counter displays a count higher than 0, the character was successfully copied.
